I am proud to recommend Dr. XXXX XXXX for selection to a doctoral program for international dentists. My name is XXXX, D.M.D., and my specialty is Cosmetic Dentistry. Norm shadowed me intensively and also assisted with many things, including complicated procedures. We spent a significant amount of time with her over a sustained period, and I found her support invaluable throughout the time that she was with me, from September of 2016 through October of 2017.

Perhaps the thing I most appreciated about XXXX was how quickly she was able to learn and even master many advanced techniques in dentistry. This was especially the case concerning open tray techniques in implantology. Still, I was also amazed at her ability to make the most of intra-oral cameras and her solid understanding of crowns. Norm has an excellent grasp of the advanced software programs that we use in dentistry, which even surpasses my own, and, thus, she was a particular pleasure to have around on those occasions when we found ourselves computer-challenged.

Norm is highly knowledgeable and conversant concerning issues of diversity and cultural differences in dentistry and incredibly adept at communication with the patient, even difficult ones. She also has an excellent grasp of dental health care policies, particularly concerning the HIPAA. She has already developed a solid understanding of general dental procedures and what it takes to run a successful dental practice in the USA.

If I can provide you with further details concerning XXXX’s candidacy for DDS or DMD program, please feel free to contact me .

Sincerely,

The specialty has been neglected in my home country of Vietnam, with predictably sad results; according to the World Health Organization, Vietnam has one of the highest incidences of dental caries in children. I have sought as much exposure to the specialty as possible, carefully observing the techniques applied and characteristics displayed by professionals in the thing. It is clear that Pediatric Dentistry calls for particular and uncommon attributes in addition to high levels of specialist skill and knowledge, particularly: great patience, empathy, and ability to inspire trust and confidence, and, most importantly, a genuine and deep affection for children. I would not be making this application if I were not convinced that I possess these characteristics.

I have familiarized myself with the sad statistics relating to dental health in my country, especially in the field of pediatric dentistry. I have carefully considered the possible solutions to these problems. I am incredibly impressed by the work of Professor Francisco Ramos-Gomez, ‘Changing the Education Paradigm in Pediatric Dentistry, which provides much useful material that I hope to apply in my country in the future.

I qualified in 2014 at the University of Health Sciences in Ho Chi Minh City. I received several awards and honors, including the recognition of first place for my graduation thesis. My training included ‘outreach’ projects for the ‘East Meets West Foundation’ in 2012, during which we treated over 1,000 orphans with a full range of dental services. I worked with dentists and students from several countries, such as Canada, Hong Kong, and Sweden, who shared a highly challenging, satisfying, and maturing experience. My ambition to work with child patients was totally confirmed during this time.

I worked for two years as a general dentist in a clinic where I was fortunate to have had substantial exposure to child patients. Many patients in the country, including children, only visit a dentist when there is acute pain. There are particular problems in rural areas where the children are not exposed to fluoridation. ‘Dental Phobia’ is widespread, especially, again, in rural populations. Significant educational work was, therefore, necessary to encourage a regular and effective routine of oral and dental hygiene. There is no specialist Pediatric Dental Clinic in Vietnam, and the specialty is hardly recognized. It is my ultimate goal to found such a clinic and, after that, to pass on my passion by training other specialists to replicate the clinic in various cities in the country. I also hope to create links with nurseries, schools, and youth organizations to educate children and parents in dental and oral hygiene to enhance dental health among the young as far and as widely as possible.

I was raised to regard voluntary endeavor as an obligation rather than a choice. During my training, I was involved in various voluntary projects, during which I sought and acquired beneficial leadership experience. I have acted both as a non-medical volunteer and as a Surgical Assistant for Operation Smile, providing cleft lip and palate repair. There can be few more satisfying areas of work that provide much joy to the patients and their relatives. In June 2013, I was involved in ‘outreach’ treatment for the Department of Public Health, during which we treated over 2,000 patients in rural areas. I was closely involved in organizing the annual ‘Welcome Fairs’ for new students at my college.

I have undertaken two published research projects, one of which was directly related to pediatric dentistry: ‘Fluoride Concentration in Nails and Hair of 5-year-old Children in Fluoridate and Non-Fluoridate Areas of Ho Chi Minh City. The other project was entitled ‘Oral Health Status and DMFS Index of Residents in Ba Ria-Vung Tau Province in 2013’. I immensely enjoyed this work; I believe that the characteristics of an excellent researcher overlap significantly with those required of an excellent specialist, such as; an analytical approach to problems, creative and original thinking, determination, and cross-disciplinary cooperation to achieve optimum outcomes. I certainly hope to be involved in research in my future career.

Since arriving in the U.S., I have worked for nearly a year as a Dental Assistant in two clinics. This has provided me with an appreciation of the U.S. dental environment and has enabled me to observe the application of the most advanced equipment and techniques. This experience has also provided an insight into how a skilled assistant can ‘smooth the path’ of treatment and provide added reassurance to the nervous and young patients. It has been a beneficial experience and will aid me greatly in training and supporting my own assistants in the future.

I am pretty widely traveled. During my training, I visited Japan for one month as an exchange student. I was a tour guide for a group of 8 Vietnamese dental students visiting Singapore, having organized all the travel and accommodation arrangements. I also researched during a month-long visit to Thailand, working in the Oral-bio laboratory at Mahidol University. I am fluent in Vietnamese and English and have a basic understanding of French, which I intend to improve as time permits.

I believe that it is essential for a busy professional to pursue hobbies and interests. I am a skilled traditional dancer, and I have won medals in Karate and Badminton. I enjoy practicing yoga and am an enthusiastic and professional cook, and I am preparing a blog to share my enthusiasm and recipes. I am also an avid reader with broad tastes in literature.

To summarize: I have enjoyed a successful academic and professional career to date; my work to date has, as far as possible, been aimed at the treatment of child patients; I have undertaken a substantial private study of the problems relating to pediatric dentistry and, most importantly, I am genuinely passionate in my wish to improve the dental education and health of children, especially in my home country.

I can assure the reader that, if appointed, I shall apply myself to my work and studies with exceptional diligence and great enthusiasm. Thank you for considering my application.

I used to listen to him describing his work, telling us how satisfying it was to improve facial appearance, relieve pain and extend dietary choices. Like most young people, I had a vague ambition of spending my life helping others, and this seemed an excellent way of doing so. I decided to become a dentist and have never regretted my career choice.

Entry into Dental Schools in my home country of Iraq is highly competitive, and I was delighted that my determination and diligence were recognized by admittance to a prestigious program. The five-year training provided was highly demanding and comprehensive and involved substantial patient contact, and I thoroughly enjoyed every moment of it.

Having qualified, I was employed by the Health Ministry of Iraq in late 2001 and worked in a clinic in a predominantly rural area which provided very broad and early experience of a wide range of conditions and treatments. I developed particular interests in oral surgery, endodontics, and conservative dentistry and have had significant exposure to these specialties in my career. I would be very interested in assisting in research in one of these areas of work in the program if the opportunity arose. I have not undertaken any research up to this point. Still, I believe I have the persistence, determination, and the capacity for originality and creativity that would enable me to become effective in this vital process in such a dynamic professional environment.

It is my goal, ultimately, to specialize in oral surgery and endodontics in my own practice and to enhance the skills and knowledge already acquired to enable me to become a highly effective practitioner. I enjoy helping others in achieving their professional goals. I would seek opportunities in the future to pass on the fruits of my skills and knowledge to entrants to the profession who share my passion for enhancing patients' lives by offering relief from pain and discomfort, improving facial aesthetics, and broadening dietary choices.

Because of the fondness I developed for the rural population and their significant need for dental services, I continued to do some work at the government clinic even after opening my own practice in 2007. The farming community with which I worked comprised simple, honest, and kindly people who were very grateful for the services that we offered, and it was a joy and privilege to treat them. Unfortunately, the tendency among the poor and rural populations worldwide to give low priority to oral and dental health was very evident. They tended to seek treatment only when it became unavoidable. I spent much time providing preventative education to encourage effective oral and dental hygiene regimes and emphasizing the link between these and general health. I certainly intend to assist at free and subsidized clinics in the US, when qualified to practice here, and to provide preventative education as widely as possible to those who need it.

For the past two years, I have worked as a Dental Assistant in a general practice in Georgia and have passed Part 1 of the NDBE. I also read professional journals to keep abreast of the constantly evolving techniques and materials that are being developed. My work as a DA has provided me with significant exposure to the dental environment in the US, as well as enabling me to assist in a wide range of dental treatments.

I have always enjoyed patient contact and can gain the confidence and trust of patients quickly. I get on well with colleagues and apply myself to my work with enthusiasm, diligence, and care, always prioritizing patient welfare and seeking to ‘go the extra mile.

I am the mother of two but find time to read widely and to undertake a range of handicraft works that, while providing excellent recreation, also enhance my manual dexterity. I have settled into the US culture very well and immensely enjoy living here. I have happily worked with colleagues and patients of many social and cultural backgrounds. I love learning about other cultures and sharing knowledge of my own. I was trained in the medium of the English language and considered myself to be bilingual in Arabic and English.

To summarize, I am a dentist with relatively long and extensive professional experience undertaken in different environments. I have done as much as possible to familiarize myself with the US dental environment and greatly look forward to working in the profession in the US. In addition to the technical skills and experience that I have acquired, I consider myself to be a patient-centered professional with the characteristics that enable me to empathize and readily gain the confidence of my patients and colleagues. I feel sure that I have the potential to excel within the program and in my career beyond it, as is my firm intention.

Thank you for considering my application.

I hope to be chosen not only because I am an experienced and very hard working dentist, but also because I earned my MDS Degree last year in Prosthodontics, August 2016, in my native India, before relocating to the USA. Even though I only arrived this past February, 2017, I have already cleared the hurdles of the TOEFL and NBDE 1; and working towards the NBDE Part II. I am also now certified for CPR and have already engaged extensively as a volunteer with NY Cares.

A “Fellow” of the International Congress of Oral Implantologists (ICOI), I am mainly dedicated to all aspects of Implant Dentistry, and, after completing your distinguished program, I very much look forward to continuing to cultivate a lifetime investment in the cutting-edge of research and practice in this most promising avenue of dental advancement.

I keenly look forward to many decades to come of full-time + service in dentistry, always, and progressively, with a focus on the underserved, both at home in my native India and here in America as well. Until I left India, I distinguished myself by helping the NGOs Karma Kutir and G. D. Foundations with many dental-related volunteer work: free dental check-ups and treatment camps, etc. I gave presentations on oral hygiene and its importance, counseling, educating, and reaching out to as many children as possible, in particular. I see this as an integral and permanent, foundational aspect of my career as a dentist, and I look forward to continuing to build my network and my subsequent contribution to dental missionary efforts worldwide, with a particular focus on India and missionary dental efforts based in the USA.

Nothing fills me with such joy as working to educate underserved communities about the basics of oral hygiene and care protocols, treatment options, oral cancer awareness, tobacco cessation counseling, and so on. My finest moments have been spent organizing street plays, using audio-visual aids, and pamphlets, educating children in school, and ensuring fluoridation of water in remote areas to prevent dental caries. I have also invested a great deal of time learning about the various obstacles – on a global level – to making dental care more affordable, particularly in the Developing World.

Throughout the course of my MDS Program in India, I became more and more focused and geared up for a career spanning Prosthodontics through Implantology. I seek to become a highly active contributor to Implant and Full Mouth Rehab Dentistry – giving my professional heart and soul to extensive new initiatives in oral health care.

During my clinical experience as a Masters's student, I came across many patients who were ideal candidates for implants, but couldn’t afford them. During my interactions with professionals in this field in the USA, I now better understand many of the complex reasons why implantology remains outside of the financial reach of broad swaths of the US population as well. My fondest desire and hope, if I were selected to earn the DDS/DMD here in the USA, would be to spend every day on the cutting edge of advancing techniques in Implantology, and to serve as a witness to ever more significant numbers of people benefitting from our new technology at the same time that it constantly improves. At the same time, I want to always remain active as well in the education of my local community, helping to raise awareness of the importance of healthy dentition, the advanced treatment options.

The most important thing to me professionally is that my patients feel comfortable with whatever option they are choose for their dental treatment. I want to create audio-visual aids and models for my patients to understand better the steps involved in each procedure that they will go through, in detail, to encourage the entire understanding and most effective cooperation between dentist and patient, completely overcoming all anxiousness and fear.

My central long-term dream is to open and operate a free or nearly-free, dental healthcare multi-specialty hospital center geared for a large number of patients, with streamlined attention from diagnostics to treatment and follow-ups, probably in India.

I am more of a people than a lab person, more inclined towards clinical practice than laboratory research. Nevertheless, I seek proficiency in every aspect of implant treatment for the balance of my career, in particular, including materials science and issues, etc. I want to devote my life to making implant treatment as successful, predictable, and affordable as possible, even in compromised cases.

In my spare time, I enjoy meditation, cooking/baking, hosting, sports, and fitness: Zumba, Bhangra, badminton, and swimming. All of these help to keep me focused on dentistry.

I thank you for considering my application.

tag:dentistrypersonalstatement.com,2019-02-08:/entries/1807348Masters Periodontology, Residency, Saudi2019-02-08T04:03:00-08:002022-08-27T01:37:12-07:00
As a Periodontologist from Saudi Arabia, throughout the course of my training and professional experience, I have often been surprised at how many of the people in my country have less than even a rudimentary grasp concerning the essentials of oral health care, even many of those who are quite wealthy; they remain uninformed and continue to suffer the consequences. This has helped me to develop into a dentist who is especially conscious of and concerned with the binding nature of public health education in the area of oral health care and prevention of disease. Being selected for a Residency and Master’s Program in Periodontics in the USA will help me enormously to realize my long-term goal of making significant contributions to the advance of public oral health care as a priority in the KSA.

I could not be more devoted to the study and engaged with the practice of Periodontics. Currently practicing in our university periodontal clinic, I see patients with periodontal diseases every day, often Chronic Periodontitis with bottomless pockets and bad oral hygiene. Thus, I have developed a keen sensitivity concerning the enormous work that needs to be done concerning raising community awareness of our public oral health challenges. For some time now, I have also been volunteering as much as I can to work with an oral health education team in public venues, providing free dental services, answering questions about available resources and opportunities, etc. I see a vast prevalence of periodontal disease at these camps, gingival recession, and other dental abnormalities, most clearly due to the simple lack of basic hygiene and preventive care.

I finished dental school in the KSA, not far from the top of my class - 4.36 out of 5 – and, in addition to practicing Periodontics, I have also taught Periodontics to undergraduate students in periodontal clinics. Completing a highly-distinguished residency program such as yours and earning my Master’s Degree in Periodontics will enable me to become certified in the USA and subsequently make the appointment of full professor in Saudi Arabia.

I look forward to many decades to come, serving at the cutting edge of Periodontology in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, curriculum development for periodontology courses in my university, for example, to bring our system up to a level that is as close as possible to the way that Periodontics is practiced in the USA. I see my future role as a bridge for Periodontics expertise and state-of-the-art practice to flow from the USA to the KSA, where it is so greatly needed, as there are very few well-trained Periodontists.

As a dental student, I would observe the long lines at our clinic, and the vast numbers of people seeking periodontal and other surgical treatments, especially dental implants. Those patients seeking dental implants at our clinic had to first patiently wait for long periods on the waiting list since we only had one periodontist in our clinic that was licensed to perform dental implants. Hence, my great passion for Periodontics – driven by the great need to which I have been a first-hand observer, I have dedicated my professional life to the central cause of the advancement of Periodontics in Saudi Arabia.

Thankfully, my current, two-year position as a Teaching Assistant in the field of Periodontology at my university comes complete with a full scholarship for postgraduate study in the USA, making it comfortable for me to afford my career advancement. Most of my duties at my current post involve the supervision of dental students in periodontal course clinics. I am grateful to be gaining valuable experience in teaching and tutoring in periodontal procedures – significantly scaling and root planning and practicing full time in this area. I also appreciate very much having the opportunity to interact with particularly outstanding professors in Periodontology, such as with Dr. Nabeeh, one of my role models, who completed a residency program and earned a Master’s Degree in Periodontology in the USA. He has been inspiring and encouraging me to follow his example.

Following graduation, I served in the Ministry of Health Hospital as a maxillofacial intern for two months, mainly doing extractions in OR under the supervision of OMF surgeons, in addition to my internship with the Periodontology Department of King Khalid University Dental School. One of the cases that I will never forget was a girl in her 20s with very badly decayed posterior teeth with an insufficient vertical dimension of occlusion. This rugged case requiring an extended treatment plan with successive scaling and root planning, open flap debridement, sinus left, and dental implants – was the crowning achievement of my life until that time.

I spent much of 2016 in an intensive English Language Program at the University of Pennsylvania to bring my language skill up to excellent to excel in your Periodontology program. Most recently, our KKU Dental College has become a training center for the Saudi Board of Periodontology. I hope to be one of this program’s directors in the future.

I thank you for considering my application.

I hope very much to be accepted into your cutting-edge residency program in Prosthodontics here in the USA to receive the finest training, experience, and certification possible; and subsequently be able to make my most entire contribution to the advancement of our profession in the Middle East, especially Kuwait.

I anticipate being able to begin serving as a University Professor teaching General Dentistry classes at first, at the same time that I also teach Prosthodontics, and then gradually develop an exclusive focus on Prosthodontics as my career advances in Kuwait, especially in terms of research and. In other words, I want to be much more than a practitioner of Prosthodontics in Kuwait – where the field is still in its infancy – but also serve as an advocate for the advancement of our specialty in my country to the extent to which it is possible to do so.

By my first year of dental school, I knew that I wanted to develop a lifelong engagement with Prosthodontics, my chosen specialty in dentistry. I completed dental school at Cairo University in 2006 and then began practicing dentistry and continued to practice up until I came to America to complete a Residency Program in General Dentistry at Temple University, for which I was awarded an ICOI Fellowship. I finished the 1-year Advanced Education in General Dentistry Residency at Temple University in 2016.

During my residency program at Temple, I worked under the supervision of incredible Prosthodontic faculty; and I learned a great deal in particular from Drs. XXXX, XXXX and XXXX. I was exposed to many advanced and complex cases in Prosthodontics even though there is no specific Prosthodontics program at Temple University. I have also been extensively immersed in Implantology at Temple with courses in Comprehensive Surgical Implants, Immediate Loading Esthetics, Peri-Implantitis, MGS, Diagnosis and Treatment planning of Oral Implantology, etc. Already familiar with many procedures in Prosthodontics, I feel that I will be able to hit the ground running in your program and that I have a lot to give, making important contributions through high energy and a lot of hard work and dedication.

My long-term professional dream in dentistry has been to become a Prosthodontist for years now. I see my preparation in my AEGD residency program as preparation for excellence in my Prosthodontics residency. During my AEGD Program, I especially enjoyed doing lab work and pros cases, which I see as an art form. Nothing excites me more because of my particular passion for working with materials. I spend a lot of my free time reading in the area of material science as it relates to Prosthodontics, and I live for restoration and implant prosthetics. I adore staying up late at night in the lab doing everything with my own hands.

I thank you for considering my application to your program.

I could not be more excited about my application to your program because, as a dentist who has practiced for decades, I see the rise of Implant Dentistry as one of the most crucial advancements in oral health rehabilitation. I have already had some informal training in the past and received excellent basic training in this area here in my DMD Program at XXXX, which I will be completed before entry into your program at XXUSD – this will help me to excel. XXUSD is my first choice for various reasons, in addition to its location. I appreciate the interdisciplinary nature and academic excellence of your program, in addition to the state-of-the-art care provided to patients.

I am a practicing dentistry professional originally from Moldova who has immigrated permanently to America. I want to thank you for considering the application of an older, non-traditional student for acceptance into your program. I ask for special consideration based on the fact that I have an extensive understanding of the challenges confronting the advancement of dentistry on a global level, especially in Asia, and I am confident that this will enable me to make valuable contributions to discussions about challenges in our field, Implant Prosthodontics, in different areas of the world.

I want very much to be the older man in the class, which I think is healthy for academic diversity, and I feel strongly that the presence of a more senior, non-traditional student with vast experience in a critical part of the world is good for the academic community. Furthermore, I plan to work as hard as my body allows for another 2 to 3 decades. Based on the world-class education that I hope to receive by completing your world-class program in Implant Prosthodontics, I am most confident that I will have much to contribute to our profession over the long term. I feel strongly that my unique life experiences will propel me forward to significant contributions to dentistry that I am still destined to fulfill.

I was born in Russia’s Siberia and have visited and lived in numerous countries, consistently exercising my profession as a dentist in one way or another: participating in scientific conferences, observerships, hands-on seminars, and trade shows. The list of countries in which I have engaged on some professional level includes Germany, the Czech Republic, Israel, Poland, Hungary, Romania, Russia, and Ukraine. I have studied German and Hebrew; English is my second language after Russian. I learned German because I wanted to communicate with my colleagues in Germany.

Working as a general dentist, providing patients, especially elderly ones, with removable appliances, and restoring edentulous or partially edentulous arches, I have always striven for perfection. The first time that I heard about implants, I was overjoyed. I immediately saw the potential for my patients and the way that this creative technology would help me to solve complex clinical challenges, so I was anxious to perform implants myself.

My family and I immigrated to the USA several years ago, and in 2015 I began my DMD studies at XXXX School of Dental Medicine. Even though implant dentistry is incorporated into our program here at Rutgers, I feel like I need additional training to be completely confident in providing my patients with the most acceptable treatment option and perhaps teaching in this area in the future. Most of all, I want to make sure that I provide all my own patients with absolutely state-of-the-art implants.

I am most keenly looking forward to intensive clinical training in both fixed and removable Implant Prosthodontics, combined with the complete possible immersion in the literature concerning Dental Implantology – preparing me for research engagement in this area. The experience of completing your program will result in new, incredibly creative energy that I will to devote to the cause of dental missions to the Developing World, in my case, Central Asia in particular – as well as here in the USA. I want to begin or become part of a multidisciplinary dental institute, perhaps a "Head and Neck Center," where together with other colleagues and specialists, we could not only implement the most recent and advanced technology available in the rehabilitation of the health status of our patients, but this would also be an excellent platform for valuable research in new and advanced treatment methods.

I ask to be considered for admission based on my well-established passion for dentistry. Dentistry is my life, and I have now devoted 25 years to it, a lot of postdoctoral education, abundant experience. Your program will bring my international education to fruition in America where I can now blossom as a dentist like never before.

I thank you for considering my application.

My inspiration for earning the DDS Degree in America was very much enhanced by the opportunity that I had to meet numerous, especially distinguished dentists from America. While a dental student in India, the American Academy of Implant Dentistry taught a course in my dental school, and I had the great honor of listening to speakers from a variety of prestigious dental programs in the USA, including Loma Linda and Rutgers. Thus, while still a student, I became hungry to learn dentistry on the cutting edge with the latest techniques and especially minimally invasive procedures. I hope to devote much of my professional life to research; in addition to preparing me for state-of-the-art practice, your research-intensive DDS program will also prepare me to excel as a researcher.

Biology was my starting point, and I excelled: dissecting frogs and drawing plants and animals in secondary school are among my fondest memories of the time when I began to hope and dream that I would become a either a doctor or a dentist. I ultimately chose dentistry because I love its challenge, intricacy, and especially critical importance.

I now have almost seven years of experience in Malaysia as a full-time faculty member and also practicing dentistry at a private clinic. I have been teaching as an Assistant Professor since June of 2013. I am currently a Senior Lecturer in Prosthodontics.

By the time I completed dental school in my native India, I had already decided to cultivate a particular lifetime focus in the area of Prosthodontics. Initially, I focused on this area of dentistry because, in the part of Malaysia where I am from, the Mahabubnagar and adjacent Nalgonda districts, the water has a very high fluoride content resulting in several critical oral health issues. Almost all older adults have at least some missing teeth. I wanted to make these older people smile. After finishing my Master’s Degree in Prosthodontics, I worked as a consultant to many local clinics, charging only for materials, providing me with enormous satisfaction through the high volume as well as high quality of the service that I was providing for those most in need. I feel incredibly blessed to help older people, to see them chew their food without difficulty, and to smile.

Recently, I spent several months in the USA shadowing and assisting my cousin, an endodontist, in his clinic in Maryland. I very much admired his streamlined operation, intense work ethic, and his facility at communicating with patients, his skill at putting them at ease and inspiring them with confidence. I immediately fell in love with the vast diversity of complicated cases that my cousin dealt with. He is a role model for many members of his community and me. At this same time, I had the opportunity to visit XXXX hospital, which was not far away, where I could make some valuable contacts in the maxillofacial prosthesis.

Helping patients with maxillofacial defects stands at the center of my professional dreams. After earning the DDS Degree, I hope to continue my professional advancement at Johns Hopkins in Maxillofacial Prosthetics. I am incredibly excited by developments in 3D printing for maxillofacial defects, CBCT, and the use of computer technology, generally speaking. I see enormous opportunity in the area of Digital Smile Design. I especially loved art as a child and adolescent, always drawing and using clay to model items that interested me. This is another principal reason why I chose dentistry and gravitated toward Prosthodontics. I enjoy fine detail enormously.

My parents greatly valued education and discipline, so I was able to attend some of the best schools in India. I participated in many district competitions, especially sports and drawing, because I was the best in my school in both. Every once in a while, I visited a private dental hospital in my area to watch the dentists; this helped me learn a lot about this career and inspired me to give my all to dentistry.

Perhaps the most vital aspects of my application to your competitive DDS program are the facts that I have already earned the Master’s Degree in Prosthodontics and now have nine publications in this area. Earning the DDS will propel me forward to a lifetime of distinguished service in Prosthodontics research and development with particular attention to the underserved, older people in desperate need of care for some of the most basic of life’s necessities, chewing their food, and smiling.

I thank you for consideration of my application.

My father tried to help his sister’s husband build a business that went belly up, and we were constantly harassed by creditors while still in Korea, threatening to jail my father. This went on right up until we left for America and had a very negative impact on my emotional development as a child and adolescence. Finally, after selling out and signing away what little my family had, we entered the US on a visitor visa when I was 15 years old, and I went straight to high school knowing very little English.

My father obtained a student visa while he was studying at a language institute, and then we applied for permanent residency. Unfortunately, having put their trust in an unscrupulous Korean attorney in America, by the time that my parents realized that they had been hoodwinked and the only money they had been able to save stolen, it was too late, and our visa was already expired. Our status as undocumented aliens in America came at a high cost psychologically, emotionally, and most of all economically, since the undocumented status radically limits employment opportunities. I was undocumented until my first year of college, when I was able to receive DACA status allowing me to stay here in the US without deportation and to work legally. I will not be able to obtain a green card unless there is immigration reform at some point in the future and I qualify for an amnesty.

Upon my arrival in the US, I had left everyone and everything I had known my whole life, except my immediate family. It was a big adjustment, and life was every bit as much of a struggle for us in America as it had been in Korea, more challenging and nerve-wracking still in many ways. My family and I arrived here on August 25th, 2006, with just a minimal amount of money and nothing else. My parents did not speak a word of English, and I spoke only a little; yet, I was immediately designated the spokesperson, and I quickly accustomed myself to the new language and cultural setting. I became responsible for many things that should have been the responsibility of my parents, signing lease contracts and setting up utility services, communicating with my parents’ bosses, buying a used car, etc.; every day came complete with significant challenges.

My parents have always been very hard-working people, working multiple jobs almost always for the minimum wage. Many nights, I accompanied my weary parents to help them with their jobs. When I saw my parents working twelve hours a day, seven days a week, it made me appreciate their love and sacrifice; and it became the driving force that pushed me to excel in my high school despite the language barrier.

Being undocumented made the already challenging life of a poor, immigrant family much harder; the concerns related to fear of deportation, finances, and a sense of isolation weighed heavily on me. Whenever I did not know the exact whereabouts of my family, I feared for their safety. My constant awareness of the fact that I was not guaranteed the same rights and protection as my high school classmates made me cautious and attentive at all times.

I began working outside the home in the 10th grade. Because I understood well that my parents were struggling despite their hard work, I had to contribute to my family financially. Despite the uphill battle that I faced, I graduated within the top 3 percent of my high school class. Still, since I was undocumented, I was not eligible to receive any financial aid or take out student loans. So, I worked multiple jobs, an average of fifty hours a week, all through college. Working my way through college was the most formidable challenge I have ever faced. Both a full-time student and more than a full-time worker, I often found myself struggling in my classes. On a couple of occasions, I missed an exam because I was passed out studying overnight two days in a row, physically and mentally exhausted.

Despite the disadvantages that I have faced, I was able to volunteer at various events and serve my community as a translator, while simultaneously shadowing a successful dentist. I take pride in being self-sufficient and achieving my goals slowly but surely. I am also thankful for the rigors that I have faced as an undocumented immigrant because it has inspired my intense compassion for others in similar circumstances.

I especially appreciated him because he was the fifth orthodontist that we went to and the only one of the five who was willing to help me at a price that my parents could afford. As a result of my Orthodontics treatment, my self-esteem improved. After spending seven years with him as my orthodontist, I began to feel like he was a part of my family. This unique relationship is one of the foremost reasons why I hope to become an orthodontist myself, showing a similar kind of compassion for my patients from families of humble resources in particular. In preparation for dental school, I majored in Biology and will be graduating at the end of this fall semester, 2016. I hope to begin dental school next year, 2017.

Throughout the course of this past year, I have spent 400 hours shadowing Dr. XXXX DDS and learning a great deal about how to operate a General Dentistry practice; almost every facet of running a dental clinic, from cleaning and caring for the equipment to helping out with office details and paperwork. Most of all, I help to prepare the patients for their treatments, and this part of my time spent with Dr. XXXX, in particular, has me thoroughly convinced and inspired that dentistry is the correct path for me to follow professionally.

Being teased by one’s peers at a young age can be an extremely difficult for any child. My teeth protruded dramatically due to my bad habit of sucking my thumb. It was a vicious cycle: hurt by the teasing, I tried to comfort myself by sucking my thumb. My orthodontic treatment was instrumental in giving me a life replete with the professional dream of becoming an orthodontist myself and saving the lives of children who suffer, as I did. I hope to have my own orthodontics clinic someday; and to help children whose parents have only very modest resources, as was the case with my family.

My adolescent and adult life so far has been entirely devoted to learning, especially everything that I can about the human body, since learning and adapting is especially critical in the our field with dentists endlessly confronted with new advances and innovations requiring them to keep up with the latest procedures and technologies. As an undergraduate research assistant working in a cancer research lab, I continuously perform experiments in search of new breakthroughs. The excitement and eagerness surrounding the search for new knowledge and discoveries is something that I find extraordinarily fulfilling, and it inspires me all the more to excel in a career in dentistry.

As an instrumentalist of the hammered dulcimer, a percussion and string instrument, I have developed precise hand-eye coordination as a musical artist. My experiences with shadowing dentists and volunteering at dental clinics have helped me to appreciate better the importance of steady hands and a keen eye. In the cancer research lab, my tasks include snipping mice tails at precise measurements while refraining from being distracted by their squealing and squirming and using pipettes to proliferate DNA samples for analysis accurately. My hands-on experience in the lab, as well as with music, will help me to excel in dental school and beyond.

My own experience as an immigrant from Iran has helped me to master the art of interaction with people from a wide variety of cultural backgrounds here in America. During my time as a mentor at XXXX Community College, I had the profound pleasure of mentoring many students of minority ethnic backgrounds, one of which had a severe cognitive disability, requiring compassionate and patient communication. I have also volunteered many hours in XXXX Hospital’s Recovery Room. Observing the professionalism and friendliness of the doctors and nurses, especially in their interactions with patients, has also greatly inspired me to give my all to dentistry.

My dedication to the community and passion for providing services to others makes me a natural for dentistry and I eagerly anticipate working with a wide range of patients, including underserved populations, helping them to feel just as I did when my orthodontist gave me a beautiful smile for the first time. Being accepted to dental school will enable me to live my professional dream of a lifetime, building one cherished relationship after another.

I thank you for consideration of my application.

Having been born and raised in the US to Filipino parents, I was unsure what to expect but was very surprised by the differences in attitudes to dentistry. For most people in the Philippines, a visit to a dentist is an occasional and unavoidable evil to which recourse is made only when dental pain becomes unbearable rather than a regular and necessary maintenance exercise. This tendency to neglect did, at least, provide me with very early and frequent exposure to a wide range of severe conditions that would probably take many years of practice to acquire in a western country. It also incited in me a genuine passion for spreading preventative dental education to create ‘teeth for life for the younger generation both in the US and abroad.

During the third and fourth years of my dental training in the Philippines, I worked every Saturday in poor local neighborhoods. The experience of seeing so many grimaces of pain turn into smiles of relief, and the gratitude of patients, absolutely confirmed me in my career choice. In the fall of 2015, I was fortunate to be allowed to work as a volunteer with ‘Operation Smile’ during which I assisted in oral reconstruction procedures under the direction of leading Chinese and European practitioners and learned much in the process. I have also provided voluntary assistance on several medical missions, which was a beneficial and satisfying supplement to my formal training.

I hope to qualify to practice in an economically deprived area of the US, and I believe that the relevant experience that I have accrued will enable me to be particularly effective in such a community. I would also regard preventative education in oral hygiene and dental care to be an obligation and would seek to establish relationships with local institutions, especially schools, to further this end. It is clear that the earlier that dental education is provided, the more likely that healthy habits are acquired, and I would aim to assist in the provision of such education, especially to the very young.

Since returning to the US, I have volunteered in several practices. I have been allowed to ‘shadow’ several dentists, including specialists in orthodontics, endodontics, and oral surgery, in addition to routine general practice. This has given me valuable insights into how dentistry is practiced here, cross-disciplinary cooperation, and inefficient clinic administration. I have also sought to ‘keep abreast of the subject by wide reading of professional journals and texts. I am very excited to be part of a discipline in which so many advances in materials and techniques are being made, and I intend to seek to be aware of all such passages as they occur. I would be very keen to assist in research on new materials to test and prove them for the earliest and most comprehensive possible application.

I was raised to work hard and to excel rather than merely to ‘do enough.’ I gained a GPA of 3.8 for my bachelor's degree and third place in the class rankings when qualifying. When I arrived in Cebu in the Philippines, I did not speak the local Cebuano language when I arrived but acquired fluency within a year while also studying dentistry. I offer these as reliable indicators of my academic ability and potential, diligence, and commitment.

I seek to be a ‘well-rounded’ person and believe that all work and no play ‘makes Jack a dull boy. I have a minor in Theater from my undergraduate years, and I enjoy acting when the opportunity arises. I also play guitar, which has assisted in the acquiring and retaining an excellent level of manual dexterity. I also enjoy choral singing and love swimming. I have enjoyed some modest success in competitions in both singing and swimming.

I have happily trained, worked, and socialized with people from many ethnic and social backgrounds. I love to learn about other cultures and in sharing information about my own. I am an ‘easy-going’ person who enjoys meeting new people and has been blessed with a good sense of humor. I relate well to patients and generally gain their confidence easily and quickly. I am deeply aware of the importance of seeing patients as unique individuals rather than a set of notes and x-rays and will seek to avoid that trap with determination throughout my career.

To summarize, I believe that I have provided evidence of being academically able and a committed and diligent person with an excellent dental education and significant and broad practical experience. I am confident that I have the potential to excel within the program and to become an excellent and highly effective practitioner once qualified.

Thank you for considering my application.

tag:dentistrypersonalstatement.com,2018-03-30:/entries/1662363Orthodontics Residency, Masters, American2018-03-30T04:04:00-07:002022-08-27T01:19:43-07:00
My initial interest in dentistry was stirred when I became aware of the work of ‘Operation Smile,’ a team of oral surgeons who provide free cleft lip and palate surgeries for children worldwide—seeing the ‘before’ and ‘after’ images aroused an interest in Orthodontics at the very start of my ‘professional journey’ which has never left me. I became a dentist to make a positive difference in patients’ lives, and I already feel that I have succeeded to some degree. Seeing grimaces of pain turn to smiles of relief, while extracting teeth, in underserved communities in the Philippines, provided great satisfaction and indeed confirmed me in my choice of career.

I now seek to acquire the specialist skills and knowledge of Orthodontics to maximize my usefulness. I want to be a specialist who can undertake the treatments that provide the dramatic changes in appearance and confidence in patients that I have witnessed before and during my training. I am also excited at the prospect of working in a field in which new techniques and materials are being so rapidly developed, and I hope to play a part in further advances in the area. I have sought as much exposure to the specialty as possible during my training. My goal is to be a member of a cleft and craniofacial team working in a private practice and perhaps part-time in a children’s hospital.

I have been involved in various outreach programs and free clinics as a student dentist. I have worked with the homeless and refugees in the US and with those unable to afford dental treatment abroad. I have provided essential medicines, delivered oral hygiene education, and assisted with surgery. I see the continuation of voluntary work as an obligation rather than a choice, having been so personally fortunate in life. I would love the opportunity to give some of my time and skills to a project such as ‘Operation Smile’ in the future. Still, I will certainly continue to undertake voluntary work, whatever my professional future is to be.

I am aware that particular skills and characteristics are called for in this specialty, such as critical thinking, planning skills and an awareness of the need for cross-disciplinary cooperation as well as an ability to communicate technical and complex matters in simple language to patients and their families and to listen with care and genuine empathy to their concerns. I am also conscious that patients will naturally seek a specialist with whom they can place exceptional levels of confidence and trust in situations where long and complex treatments may arise. I am confident that I have such skills and characteristics and the potential to develop them further to become a first-class specialist.

My degree results will assure a high level of academic ability and potential based on a solid work ethic and a high degree of determination to achieve challenging goals. Being selected to act as ‘peer tutor’ to first-year students during the last year of my training is an example of the confidence shown in me by my teachers and in my technical knowledge and ability to communicate it effectively. I also volunteered to tutor a visiting Korean researcher in English. I have greatly enjoyed these teaching experiences and hope that, once I have sufficient experience, I shall find an opportunity to share Orthodontic skills and knowledge with future students who are as enthusiastic about learning as I am now.

I get on quickly with others and particularly enjoy the company of children and adolescents. I have happily studied, worked, and socialized with people of many social and cultural backgrounds. I am fascinated with new cultures and places and am well-traveled, having visited nine countries in Europe, Central and South America, Africa, Asia, and Australasia. I hope to be able to revisit some of these countries and to visit others. I cannot claim any excellent language skills, but I do speak some French and hope to have time to improve this in the future.

I seek to be a ‘well-rounded’ person and recognize that it is essential for those in a pressured and demanding working environment to be able to ‘switch’ effectively from work to recreation modes. I have several hobbies and pastimes. I enjoy the outdoor life – I like to hike, backpack, snowboard, and water ski and am looking forward to trying new outdoor activities, for example, kayaking. I play soccer, and I paint and sculpt, admittedly with more enthusiasm than success. I also recently took up playing the ukulele, which is not only great fun but will provide the helpful side-effect of enhancing and maintaining a high degree of manual dexterity.

I can assure the reader that I shall apply myself with exceptional diligence, determination, and commitment to the program, if selected. I am confident that I have the foundational skills and characteristics, together with a genuine and long held passion for the specialty, which will enable me to excel in the program and to become a significant asset to the specialty in my future career.

Thank you for considering my application.

This is why, as a dentist, I hope to give my professional life to children, in particular, and to distinguish myself in the future in Pediatric Dentistry. Hand in hand with my love for children flows my great passion for research concerning how to prevent tooth decay at a very young.

A dentist from India, I married a wonderful man in the USA in March, 2013. Since that time, I have been living in America. I work as a consultant for XXXX, providing services to Life Science organizations such as Johnson & Johnson, Pfizer, Merck, etc. This position has been enormously beneficial to me as I have learned a great deal about health care structures, challenges, and resources in America.

At the center of my professional, emotional, and spiritual life, stands a child with a toothache. By earning the DSS and realizing my dream of being in a position to advance with a lifetime specialization in Pediatric Dentistry, I hope to make the entire contribution possible, especially on a relative level between the US and India, the two countries I know best.

My highest moments in life so far have been as a dental volunteer both back in India and also since I have been making my new home here in the USA, providing check-ups and free treatment to school children from families with limited resources. Building upon my 12 years of volunteer service at the XXXX Temple in Mumbai, I have also volunteered for over a year as a mentor for children and collegians at the XXXX Temple in New Jersey.

For almost a year now, I have been shadowing and assisting several different dentists near where I live in New Jersey, and I could not be more excited by my acclimation to state-of-the-art dentistry. I have been able to hit the ground running, in part, because I am an experienced dentist who came to America only after long hours of service for almost two years, right up until the time that I flew to America, including eight months with XXXX, a corporate dental chain. I also worked for a private dental clinic.

I like very much to think of myself as a global citizen with a worldwide outlook. It pleases me that I am almost as well-traveled as I am well-read, having visited Singapore, Indonesia, Nepal, Mauritius, and Dubai. As an expression of our faith as part of the Swaminarayan religion, we follow the guidance of our gurus (monks), which help us to develop our spiritual understanding further, enabling us to make wise life decisions. Once upon a time, a few of our gurus were in Europe visiting devotees and were invited to visit a Mercedes car manufacturing plant. During the tour of the manufacturing facility, the tour guide boasted impressive figures concerning safety features that have saved many lives. They left pondering, however, the fact that 80% of accidents are a result of human error, making poor – often split-second - decisions. At the same time that I am a dentist, I also seek to become a spiritual leader concerning good decision-making in diet and oral health care for the community that I serve.

My religious organization is a beautiful vehicle that provides me with enormous outreach opportunities in oral health awareness and action through their charity organizations. I am already well engaged in this area here in the US as a Health Fair organizer for BAPS. Serving my society has always been my top priority. I've also taught math and science to students from middle school through college for almost ten years now.

My experience working at several dental camps in India drives me forward and defines my professional identity for life, especially concerning children in schools. I could not feel more convinced that insufficient focus is placed on prevention. BAPS is at the forefront of the war on tobacco in India, and I personally spent eight years going from door to door in rural as well as urban areas asking people about their addictions and consumption habits. This included talking to cab drivers, fast food stand owners, etc. For the past five years, I have been training children to do the same. Since 2010, I have provided leadership for this program where about 10,000 kids in India go to homes to meet people, asking them about their addictions and encouraging them to give up their tobacco addictions.

I, too, look forward to becoming a guru, in my own way, as a dentist; I also want to be a spiritual leader in my community, blazing a trail forward in the struggle against poor consumption habits, including the abuse of alcohol and food as well as tobacco. All of those around me share my deep conviction that children need to be made aware of the profoundly negative consequences of lousy consumption habits at a very early age – particularly concerning white sugar.

I look forward to a long professional life giving my all to the practice of dentistry, particularly pediatric dentistry, at the same time that I give my all on the front lines for public education efforts in the areas of oral health and hygiene, especially as it concerns children.

I thank you for considering my application to your highly competitive program.

Of course, the most vital part of my application is what I have done since that time, with a distinguished career in dentistry in both the military and civilian life. Most of all, it would be an honor to be taken considered for selection based on my volunteer, mission activity as a dentist.

Immigrating to America in the early 1800s, my Jewish family was industrious and frugal; throughout several generations, they could amass a large fortune that their descendants would later give away. My grandfather gave 100s of millions of dollars to charity, including all of the property presently occupied by XXXX Hospital. My father flew the very first and many more angle flights to pick up families and take them to XXXX for treatment in the 60s and 70's - with our own airplanes. My family also built boys' clubs with funding for life. I will take over my father’s position on these boards when he dies. I have always been taught Service before Self, integrity in all we do, and Honor, also principles of the military which I served for many years. Service is my life, and Pediatric Dentistry is the center of the world. While in the military, the vast majority of my patients were adults. Nevertheless, the few children that I did have the opportunity to care for in the military reached deep into my heart and planted a seed, especially those that I served on humanitarian mission trips to the Developing World.

Very soon after I left the full-time military, I began filling in at the Pediatrics clinic of Dr. XXXX, who had suffered a stroke. The staff told me that I was the best that they had seen and begged me to buy this clinic, but I had already purchased another adult office a few months earlier. My first office was in a small town called XXXX, Arkansas, starting with three chairs and expanding to six, growing in time to a patient load of 3000, half of whom were children. We did not discriminate based on age. In fact, my own grandmother was our patient at 90 years old. I offer as testimony the fact that she is still alive at 103 with all of her teeth.

I remember a 10- year-old boy who came in at the end of one day with three teeth out (8,9,10) and the other front six remaining pushed back. I performed endo on the three teeth out, re-implanted and bonded others, fixing the teeth in place. I also removed parts of the bench that he had hit from his upper lip that he hit, using a 6.0 proline Mon-filament suture to close the lip and skin tears. He was afraid it would leave a scar, and he would not be able to act as this was his passion in life. I followed him for three months with revisions and final treatment. The damage became totally invisible by that time, and he is currently performing on Broadway.

Another child patient that jumps into my mind as among my most salient and treasured memories was in Guatemala; he had a cliff lip with no bone involvement. Since I had extensive surgical training in the Navy at the National Naval Medical Center, I felt comfortable enough to do the minor revision and let a local dentist to follow up and remove sutures a few weeks later. We worked with the local population in each town. We tried to teach them about preventive dentistry at the same time that we treated them, donating our remaining supplies at each location to the doctor who would be visiting next. While in Guatemala, I was able to do countless numbers of anterior strip crowns, making everyone smile. We were only supposed to see maybe 350 patients daily with two docs and five assistants. But when we heard from our local security that people had lined up for two days, sleeping in line, we went on14 hour shifts with minimal breaks so that we could see as many as 700 a day. Every day we recruited more people from the community, dentists, and assistants, and taught them while attending to the population.

My main passion now and the reason why I am applying to your program is that I would like to teach dentistry, especially Pediatric Dentistry, incorporating a focus on the unique challenges facing children in the Developing World. Central to the balance of my career will be my humanitarian mission trips with the military and my church. My father and I are First Lutheran, as was my grandfather, and I am the Vice President of my church. It is most imperative for kids to have every chance to succeed in life and dental care is especially important since it nourishes a positive self-image.

I grew up as a competitive swimmer and have been a swim coach for the past 12 years. I believe swimming builds many core values that help shape abilities throughout a lifetime. To be the best swimmer takes a lot of commitment and determination, and this has also driven me forward as a dentist. Along with volunteering for the Arkansas Mission of Mercy free dental program every year, and serving in the pedo section, I also allow the free Dental Clinic to send Moms and their kids to my clinic for free treatment when the mother is in the process of trying to find a new job.

I experienced a glimpse of this ecstasy when I played my first rhythm on a flute as a child, but I only discovered its life-changing power after I carved my first tooth in a wax block. I was only ten, and a restless child accompanying my grandmother to her dental appointment. My grandmother got to take home a new pair of dentures, and for me, I found my central dream for the future. I have always excelled at dentistry because of my diligence, persistence, and advanced hand skills - coupled with my many years of experience, I am ready to hit the ground running and distinguish myself in your program. I have a strong track record as a volunteer, especially in caring for the oral health needs of orphan children.

When I started dental school, I felt that I had finally discovered a way to combine my creativity and keen intellect in a manner that could genuinely benefit humanity. The dental school gave me the confidence to balance my dedication to academic excellence with my extracurricular commitments. I spent my spare time volunteering with several organizations, fundraising, and mentoring children at an orphanage. Investing my time in these worthwhile causes further enhanced the empathy and compassion I felt for my patients, and it motivated me to form an everlasting bond based on trust. I spent my summer breaks shadowing several local dentists to build upon my clinical skills and learn the basics of practice management. I also acquired new and essential skill sets, like establishing IV lines, suturing, and first aid, through a summer externship program at a hospital.

All these experiences prepared me to thrive in the high-pressure environment of my first job, in the dental clinic of a hospital. The challenges of working on medically compromised and special needs patients often require comprehensive knowledge and versatile treatment methodologies. I gained self-confidence working there; as the time passed, the patients learned just how much I cared about their health and wellbeing . The next set of unique populations I worked with was at a community dental clinic, where I was constrained by limited resources, and faced with high patient flow. There, I worked with many cases involving minor maxillofacial surgery. I could refine myself and provide more treatment options to my patients. After three years of intensive clinical experience, I had acquired enough faith in my patient management skills and leadership abilities to make the life-changing decision to start my own practice.

In 2006 when my clinic opened, I vowed to be more than just a dentist alleviating pain. Instead, I would be a pillar of my community, and the future of my profession. Hence, I started out by acquiring the first digital radiology in my town and constantly attended conferences and CDEs to stay abreast of the latest developments. The doors of my clinics were open seven days a week until midnight to not only serve the middle classes, but also the underserved, including the children at the orphanage where I volunteered. As much as my clinic helped others, it also helped me to evolve into a team player, an entrepreneur, and a goal-oriented person. Even though I moved to the USA in 2009, my clinic still provides me a sanctuary for three months every year, when I visit Algeria. It has been a critical way to continuously hone my clinical skills, and a constant reminder of how much I have learned, and how much more that I have yet to accomplish.

Life in the USA has required me to tap once again into my resilience and resourcefulness; my first focus was my language skills; while I was already fluent in Arabic, Berber, and French, the transition to English was huge. I enrolled in several courses at KU. Of course, learning the local culture and customs required me to venture beyond the confines of the classroom; hence, I spent two years volunteering at Lawrence Memorial Hospital. Since then, I have proceeded to work as an assistant in various locations, such as a Douglas County Dental Clinic, KC CARE clinic, and dental camps like Give Kids a Smile and KMOM. Working successfully under the guidance of so many different dentists has reassured me that I can work comfortably in the future with my faculty and peers, regardless of their backgrounds. My shadowing at UMKC Dental School, has been indispensable for acquainting me with the academic and clinical expectations for a DDS student. I am very excited about studying under the finest minds in our profession.

I hope to be accepted to your competitive DDS program for international dentists based on my hopes, dreams, and aspirations for a future of service to my profession, with particular emphasis on those who can least afford our help, as well as those who need it the most. After completing your program, I look forward to a lifetime working alongside like-minded people who are equally determined to help those with few resources in Algeria - providing them with a place where they might find dental care that they can afford.

My name is Dr. XXXX BDS, MDS, FDSRCS, DDS.; and I am an oral surgeon. I have worked with Dr. XXXX for the past year, twice a month. I serve at the clinic where he is the general manager and provide a variety of oral surgery procedures, including implant placements, frenectomy, impacted third molar extractions, and affected canine exposure for orthodontic treatment. XXXX is a great pleasure to work with because of his very high level of efficiency since he has oversight of the clinic, including all comprehensive examinations and dental treatments. I was very much favorably impressed with Dr. XXXX’s organizational and communication abilities as he assumed a leadership position in the organization and coordinated of multiple specialists to provide the best dental care to the patients.

I assisted Dr. XXXX with consultations concerning certain especially challenging oral surgery cases. Dr. XXXX is always cautious to arrive and the correct prognoses concerning dental treatments and comprehensive treatment planning. He is careful to always think about the consultation of his colleagues for complex cases. He observed and assisted me while we were working together. I do not remember a single point that Dr. XXXX had not diagnosed more-or-less correctly, and I was always pleased to see how he had the patient and everything else reading and waiting for me when I arrived. We sit down together to compare notes and strategies before each surgery to devise a realistic, if not ideal, a treatment plan for each patient.

Dr. XXXX is the quintessential team player, and teamwork seems to come most natural to him. While his interests in dentistry are broad, he seems to be most interested in Periodontics and that is his central focus. I could not recommend Dr. XXXX more highly for your Residency Program in Periodontics.

Sincerely,

Dr. XXXX BDS, MDS, FDSRCS, DDS

My name is Dr. XXXX, DDS, MSD, Ph.D. and I am a periodontist. I am writing this letter of recommendation on behalf of my colleague Dr. XXXX, one of the most dedicated and talented dentists with whom I have had the opportunity to work with side-by-side throughout the course of my extensive career in dentistry. This is especially true of XXXX concerning Periodontics. He has shadowed and assisted me in this area regularly for the past two years. His curiosity about and devotion to the cutting edge of Periodontics has no parallel based on my experience. I am convinced that Dr. XXXX would be an asset and a credit to the Periodontal Residency Program that made the excellent decision to select him.

I have been going to the clinic where XXXX serves as the managing dentist every month for the past two years to provide periodontal procedures, including implant placements, Gingival grafts, and gingivoplasty. Throughout this period, while XXXX has been observing and assisting me with my duties, I have also had the opportunity to follow him as he attends to his own responsibilities, including full responsibility for comprehensive examinations and a broad array of dental treatments and procedures. XXXX does a most admirable job of managing multiple specialists in treating dental patients facing tough challenges. I have always admired his communication and leadership as well as general management skills.

I consider myself to be XXXX’s mentor, and it is both an honor and a pleasure. I lead a local study and discussion group focused on the interdisciplinary issues surrounding Periodontics, where we help each other with treatment planning – always searching for the most solid foundation upon which to proceed for every patient whose case is incredibly complex or challenging. XXXX ‘s devotion to lifetime education, particularly concerning Periodontics, has enabled him to assume a leadership role in our study group and to be the contributor who works the hardest in his own research initiatives, building upon the numerous online and hands-on continuing education courses that he has taken in this and related to to areas.

I see Dr. XXXX has enormous potential to make significant contributions to our field of Periodontics if selected for advanced training in this area, particularly concerning new technologies and techniques. My colleague XXXX is not driven by the prospect of economic gain. Instead, the reverse is quite true. He is now planning to live on a reduced income compared to what he is actually earning, to return to the academy, and advance in his field so as to prepare himself for his ultimate contribution in years to come to the numerous challenges that we face in Periodontics.

Sincerely,

Dr. XXXX, DDS, MSD, Ph.D.

My name is Dr. XXXX and I am the Department Head in Periodontology at the Government Dental College and Hospital in Vijayawada, India. I mentoredXXXX in the area of Periodontics from his third year forward in dental school until his graduation in 2013. It is with immense happiness that I recommend Hemanth as a candidate for your competitive DDS program for international dentists and I do so with the fullest confidence that he will impress you most favorably as one of the most outstanding students in his class.

XXXX is the kind of student that a teacher never forgets, always consistently performing at the top academically as well as showing the greatest talent and ease with patients, resulting in the most successful of treatments. He has great enthusiasm and courage to go that extra mile over and beyond a typical student performance. For instance, while most of the BDS students I’ve seen in my department restrict themselves to the completion of assigned work, XXXX took that extra leap of faith and performed advanced periodontal surgeries that are generally reserved for Master’s students in Dental Surgery. In addition, he always demonstrated that he was up to date concerning all the latest advances and techniques in dentistry, especially Periodontics.

XXXX clearly attended to every detail of lectures and asked questions that were without fail of the highest order so as to clarify and build on a point that he thought had great potential. On examinations, he framed his answers in such a way as to clearly demonstrate his mastery not only of the fundamentals but also of the advanced concepts that were relevant to the subject at hand. He was especially impressive at the stage of oral examination – with his prompt and concise responses.

With respect to XXXX’s clinical skills, it is a pleasure to observe his natural and free hand at work, quick, efficient, accurate. I have also never seen anyone with more apparently natural talent in dealing with patients, inspiring, comforting, and thereby making the treatment a great success. XXXX is very ethical and highly motivated to educate and serve the community, especially with respect to oral hygiene and he demonstrated his dedication as a volunteer at numerous dental camps organized to promote the oral health of our rural populations.

XXXXh has clearly demonstrated that he is capable of meeting any goal that he sets for himself since he does not rest and never gives up until he meets it. The training he will receive at your program will help him reach new heights and enable him to pursue his dreams to the fullest extent possible. It would be a pleasure to provide you with any additional information concerning this exceptional candidate to your program.

Sincerely,

My name is Dr. XXXX, and I first met XXXX when we welcomed his incoming class of students to our dental program at the Government Dental College & Hospital of Vijayawada, in India, where I serve as a Department Head in Conservative Dentistry & Endodontics. He was still a teenager. I was impressed by his exceedingly polite and respectful manner, in greeting professors and staff. I could not more heartily recommend my student XXXX for your international dentist program in the USA.

We usually host a party every year for the incoming batch of students and, as a part of it, allow the new students to exhibit their talents. XXXX demonstrated his acting talent, imitating one of our best-known actors in India, and elicited shouts of glee and whistles from his audience. XXXX distinguished himself just as much in his extra-curricular undertakings as he did with his academic excellence, always near or at the top of his class. Our program is one of the most rigorous and competitive in our State, Utter Pradesh. XXXX has proven himself as a top-notch candidate for further study and professional advancement.

I have always closely observed the instruction taking place in our institution, and I tended to watch XXXX at length as a student because I preferred keeping those students with the most remarkable ability. He has a great power with his hands, matched only by his determination. I watched as he refused to stop until he had attended artistically to the minor details of cavity preparation. His high performance is constant, and he clearly gives 100% to mastering dentistry as an art form. A moral person, he has great discipline and devotion to selfless service to humanity. I have observed him putting patients at ease, treating them in a very kind and gentle manner that gained their confidence, facilitated the treatment, and eased the patient’s discomfort. It is the handful of specially gifted and exemplary students like him that enhance our reputation as an institution.

XXXX participated in several camps conducted in rural villages in our part of India, providing free dental services to those who did not have access, as well as increasing oral hygiene awareness. He was active in organizing events during which he took the whole responsibility and ensured that the events were conducted smoothly, winning great appreciation for his efforts. He also strived to create a better atmosphere for his fellow students and the new batches that were arriving by serving as Vice-Presidents of our Students and Interns Association.

XXXX would indeed prove to be an asset to your institution, and the advanced training he receives will help him to shine in the field of dentistry with his great skill and very humane touch. It would be a great pleasure for me to provide you with any additional information concerning XXXX and his qualifications.

tag:dentistrypersonalstatement.com,2017-09-23:/entries/1600698DDS, Iraqi Woman Dentist Trained in Jordan2017-09-23T08:04:00-07:002022-08-27T01:01:31-07:00
As a young girl still at the age of 7, I was mesmerized by gymnastics. The strength, agility, and beauty of the young women tumbling, balancing, and swinging overtook me, and I believed I had a natural and God-given talent for it as well. My best friend and I were chosen to represent our school in a national championship in 2000. During training, my friend attempted and failed a maneuver and broke most of her front teeth. The damage to her physical appearance completely destroyed her self-image and confidence. She left gymnastics immediately and never set foot in a gymnasium after that. This accident had such an enormous effect on her future, and this realization affected me so profoundly that it inspired my career choice.

In December 2006, my family and I were forced to flee our war-torn country, Iraq. Everything comfortable was gone in an instant. The only blessing was that my entire family found safety in Jordan. Little did I know at the time, but I was to become an expert at adapting to new cultures, customs, laws, and educational systems. I worked very hard to overcome these obstacles and succeeded in gaining entrance to the prestigious Jordan University Dental School. When I heard the news, I was overwhelmed with joy as I saw my dream becoming a reality. My life felt stable once again.

I entered dental school unaware of the possibilities ahead or the path of dentistry I would choose, only mindful that one day I would be able to pursue my passion for providing effective treatment to my patients. That day came quickly and put me in a position where I could build a good rapport with my patients to put them at ease and allowed me to indulge my desire to meet their needs. I’ve always wanted to help the underprivileged when possible; I helped to found the Jordanian Association of Dental Students, whose mission was to increase oral health awareness among the poorer members of society. Even as a foreigner, I succeeded in getting approval to intern at a governmental hospital in an urban neighborhood, because it was in keeping with the mission of the organization I helped found.

Now it was time to leave my family in Jordan and join my siblings in the United States of America, a place where I know I can keep pursuing my dream of learning the highest standards of dental care. My experience as a dental assistant in the US has broadened my horizons and exposed me to various positive learning experiences in patient care and counseling that have slowly begun to become part of my natural way of working. I am also a volunteer as a research technician at the Children’s National Hospital. This experience provided the opportunity to learn more about research methods and also to enhance my critical thinking and problem-solving skills. I find this exposure to research fascinating and hope to pursue this in my future career.

My past has had many twists and turns – I have happily studied, worked with, treated, met, and learned much about people from many ethnic and social backgrounds. These experiences have added a level of complexity, sensitivity, and understanding. I look forward to the future with excitement and hope. I have learned that much time, effort, and dedication are necessary to attain the best results. I shall apply myself with exceptional enthusiasm and diligence to excel rather than to merely succeed.
